Angela Morando: A slice of sporting life

by Ryan McCombs

As the squeaks of sneakers and the pounding of the ball against the hardwood filled the gym, sophomore Angela Morando found her seat.

It was the first basketball game she had ever attended. As Franklin Pierce got off to a hot start, she used her limited basketball knowledge to conclude that Franklin Pierce was a much better team than Saint Michaels. Boom. A Ravens player met a Purple Knights player at the rim, and they both slammed to the ground. Angela, a hockey fan at heart, enjoyed the physicality of the game so far. Maybe this isn’t so bad, she thought.

Her early enjoyment of the game was briefly put on pause as she shot a look of disgust towards a Saint Michael’s parent who apparently thought of himself as a coach. Her enjoyment resumed as Rocky’s birthday bash halftime show starts up. The absurdity of Rocky running around in a birthday hat and students throwing volleyballs across the court in the hopes of the mascots catching them has her dying laughing.

Franklin Pierce’s deadeye three-point shooting allows them to dominate the second half and cruise to a 13-point victory. As Angela leaves the gym, her ear to ear grin says what she wasn’t: this won’t be her last basketball game.
