Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was re-elected on Wednesday, April 10th and was congratulated by ally and U.S. President Donald Trump according to NYTimes.

Despite close competition from his main challenger, Benny Gantz, Netanyahu secured the position for a fifth time.

“Trump warmly congratulated (me) and the Israeli people,” Netanyahu tweeted.

“He’s been a great ally and he’s a friend. I’d like to congratulate him on a well-thought-out race,” Trump said.

“Netanyahu’s re-election improved the chances of peace between Israel and the Palestinians. Everybody says you can’t have peace in the Middle East, with Israel and the Palestinians. I think we have a better chance with Bibi having won,” Trump said

Throughout the election campaign, there were billboards showing both Trump and Netanyahu shaking hands, promoting their close relationship.

An Israeli-Palestinian peace plan is being worked on by Trump’s team but no details have been presented.
