Tom Flanagan demonstrated his passion for creating stained glass windows in Marulli lounge for the Academic Showcase.
Flanagan went into detail as to why he was interested in the making of stained glass and what made him learn the craft in his 20s.
Throughout his childhood, it was common for a house to have at least stained glass window. Flanagan found interest in the effects stained glass can have the mind. This occurred after he received his degree in Philosophy.
“Stained glass can transport you into a different world,” said Flanagan.
The process of making stained glass windows is a very time consuming process. It has many steps, from copying the initial design multiple times, cutting the glass, making sure each piece fits together on the window and finalizing the design in the window. Each step introduces more and more time in the process which is very meticulous.
In the end of his presentation, Flanagan allowed for people in the audience to go up to the front and try their hand at scoring and cutting glass. John Mede was one of the students attempt to cut the glass.
“It was fun, I was trying not to cut my hand on the glass,” said senior John Mede.
