Sporting slice of life: Cas’s first soccer game
by Eben Gourlay
Junior Cas Szulc had his hoodie tied up, leaving only his face exposed to the bitter cold during the women’s soccer game at Sodexo Field. The sounds of drums and cheers filled the air as the game began. Cas glanced over at the scoreboard with a puzzled look before saying, “45 minute halves seem long.” He became quiet and focused on watching the game.
Early on, the game was slow and saw very few scoring opportunities for either team. Slouched over the fence, Cas murmured “I just want to see a goal.” Shortly after, he got his wish, although it was scored by Southern New Hampshire. He gave me a grin, as if he felt partially responsible for the Ravens going down 1-0. Less than four minutes later, the Ravens scored a goal of their own, tying the game at 1. Cas pumped his fist into the sky, letting out a sigh of relief. “I don’t feel as guilty now that we are on the board,” he said.
Early in the second half, the Ravens scored on a penalty kick. I looked over to see Cas’s reaction, only to realize he was on his phone and missed the play. As the crowd roared, Cas had a befuddled look while trying to figure out what he missed. Luckily, he was able to watch the Ravens score two more goals on their way to a 4-2 victory over Southern New Hampshire.
