People are buying hatcheries out of their baby chicken due to the continuing spread of the Coronavirus according to the New York Times.

“People are panic-buying chickens like they did toilet paper,” said Tom Watkins, the vice president Murray McMurray Hatchery, of Webster City, Iowa.

Stores that sell chicks, like Tractor Supply Company, have seen lines out the door to buy their stock of baby birds. Other feed stores are having trouble keeping the shelves stocked.

People also have much more free time being stuck at home. This has led to people who wouldn’t normally have chicks becoming first time buyers, or people buying their sooner rather than they typically would. Amy Annelle, a musician in Austin, Texas, was planning to get chickens at the upcoming South by Southwest festival. The festival was canceled so Annelle chose to get chicks now and raise them herself.

Grocery stores are sold out of eggs and farms are selling out of chicks; however, pet stores are still open.
