Seniors get penalized for late housing selection cards
by Alyssa Lewis
A day after housing selection cards were due, some seniors were informed their housing selection would be negatively impacted and moved to a second selection time due to late housing card submissions.
Each student had to fill out a housing card before the deadline with their name, all of their future roommates names, their meal plan, and desired housing location.
Daniel Gardner, Assistant Director of Residential Operations, said, “For rosters submitted on time and those submitted late, we followed the same process for figuring out their selection order and that was by taking the average of the rosters’ housing selection numbers, which gave us a selection number.”
The second round of housing selection only contained those who were late on handing in their selection cards. Those students have been expressing their anger because they feel this penalty is unfair and without it, they would have a higher selection number.
Rising senior Nicole Thibeault said, “It is completely unfair that we are being penalized for this when we have worked and earned a higher housing selection number.” Housing selection is supposed to be based off of GPA’s and earned credits however Thibeault said, “That is clearly not the case because our number is higher than many of the people on the first list.”
Students don’t believe Residential Life was accommodating during this stressful time. Rising senior Chloe Viera said, “It’s disappointing to see my school, of all schools be the one to not accommodate students suffering from the pandemic.”
Compared to other campus life, rising senior Cyrena Zemaitis said, “All other faculty members at Franklin Pierce have been so accommodating throughout this stressful and confusing time. I know that this is a new process for them, but it’s also a new process for us as well!”
Gardner said, “If a roster is going for a Lakeview townhouse and five of the six students submitted their housing form on time, but one student was late in submitting theirs, I can understand the frustrations of those five who did what they were supposed to, but now due to the late submission of their future housemate, are choosing in the second round of housing selection.”
There will be an upgrade list for students if they did not receive their desired housing. In more housing opens up over the summer, students will have the option to upgrade.
Housing selection took place for seniors on Tuesday April 21st for both selection groups.
