Student Needs Assessment Featuring the Academic Showcase
by Gus Candiotto
Seniors Cole Dorman and Kayla Thompson created a poster about student needs and leaving campus during the pandemic for FPU’s academic showcase on April 20th.
The poster shows the process created by Dorman and Thompson of a survey that will be open to students once students leave for the summer.
The student needs assessment is used to find indicators that affect student wellbeing. The survey is broken into 9 categories food insecurity, technology, environmental health, social health, spiritual health, emotional health, Intellectual health, occupational health, and physical health.
In a phone interview Dorman said, “I was asked to create a research validated wellness survey which I did, and when handed to the school administration it was not approved due to the number of surveys being sent out.”
Sophomore Matthew Kelly in a in person interview said, “I believe that this survey should be sent out so the school can have a sense on how to deal with student needs during trying to get out of the pandemic and try to work with students to return to normal campus life.”
According to Kelly campus life has been severely restricted and has mentally and physically affected everyone especially students experiences while in college. Issues that include eating properly along with mental and physical issues due to restrictions can leave students unable to better their lives while studying on campus.
This data appears necessary for the university to understand where students are having issues during this time and respond in better fashion in the future.
