Slice of sporting life: My first experience with Field Hockey

by Joshua Labrecque

“I had no idea field hockey used a ball instead of a puck” I said. On a sunny, late summer day the Franklin Pierce Ravens took on Assumption in a tough matchup of field hockey. I was unaware that the ball moved so fast up and down the field when watching my first game.

The sound of the booming crowd made me feel at home even though I’ve never seen a field hockey game in my life. The effort the team put into this game was relentless.

The Ravens were down 1-0 in the beginning, but came right back scoring 20 minutes later. The crowd, with 30 plus students, went crazy and shook the stand in excitement. I felt the love for this team.

I had to wonder, ” Why was everyone so excited for this game?” My question was quickly answered when the team kept staying in contention despite the score. I fed off the energy from the crowd and cheered in enjoyment.Even though the team lost in a close 3-2 game, the stands still cheered as the game ended.

Now that I’ve watched my first field hockey event and enjoyed watching it, I will definitely return to more games being in this environment. The competitiveness is what I love in sports.
