Slice of sporting life: Greg Perez looks forward to ultimate frisbee season
by Cam Supple
Captain Greg Perez could see his breath in the cold autumn air while practicing in a team scrimmage for FPU ultimate frisbee. He launched the frisbee down Cheshire field to his opposing teammates and proceeded to play lockdown defense. Any cut or attempt to lose Greg by his opponent failed. Wherever Greg’s defender went, he was right behind to cover. Greg is a handler, who’s primary responsibility is to get the frisbee and throw it to any open teammates.
Greg is in his first year as captain and he, along with the rest of the team, are beginning to mature and create a real program here. “I’ve been really impressed by how many people consistently show up and compete,” Greg said, “It has been a huge change from last year.”
The frisbee team continues to grow in numbers by the year, due to the management and success the program has brought to the school. “The freshman class this year is 10, which blows the three we had last year out of the water.” FPU frisbee VP Doug Quinn tells me. The Ravens continue to prepare for their upcoming tournament at Keene State on November 10th. “We are becoming one of the best teams in the area,” Quinn said, “We have the talent and now we also have the numbers too.”
