Over 100 visiting students showed up for Discovery Day on Saturday, November 9th.
In the past Discovery Day was known as Open House. This is the first year Franklin Pierce has done this event. It is a new event that is organized like an open house, but has a different name to target a smaller audience.
The event started at 8 in the morning and went until 2:30 p.m. It was filled with sessions about the university where incoming students could talk to faculty and staff about the programs and activities college students can participate in.
The main portion of the day was held in the Bubble. Before the day started off faculty and staff manned a club fair for the visiting students. President Kim Mooney gave a speech to start the sessions.
The tour leaders led students to different information sessions held by faculty and staff. Some of these sessions include The Marlin Fitzwater Center for Communications which was held by Dr. Kristen Nevious,
Tori Preis, senior manager in the Admissions Office, said, “Discovery day was a smaller event compared to other open houses.”
At one of the panels student athletes told visiting families about being a student athlete in college.
Freshman Micaela Leandro said, “I didn’t expect that many questions about my experiences at college, but I’m glad I was able to help inform students.”
Transparency Statement: For this article I did attend majority of the Discovery Day. I was at The Bubble from 9am-11am. There I was able see a student panel and observe. I then asked to interview a few people on the panel and get their point of view. I did have to email Tori Preis about her specific duties during the day. There wasn’t a lot of faculty staff there so I asked most of the students to discuss what was going on during the day. It was hard to figure out exactly what to write about since there were so many events throughout the day.
