The event marked the name change from the Monadnock Institute to the ICA. On behalf of the organizing team Gerald Burns, co-coordinator of ICA and English professor, said, “We are delighted by the extent of participation from FPU students and the community members, representatives of different groups committed to the cause of climate action and sustainability.”

Burns spoke about the purpose of the event and was followed by three lectures on the climate crisis, human factors and the large-scale improvements given by Professor Catherine Owen Koning, ICA Co-coordinator, and Fred Rogers, Professor of Geology and Natural Science

Local activists and organizations also spoke about their climate actions and plans. The meeting involved time for students to “Walk and Talk” to discuss the actions that should be taken in the future. Students suggested idea such as a solar panel array for the university and a “green” fee charged to students, like the fee that goes to support student government, to fund various campus sustainability measures.

Burns also said, “A task force will meet this Friday to determine how to move forward with the different actions recommended at the kickoff event.”
