Winter Lights Bingo shines bright

A good turnout set a lively mood at Winter Lights Bingo on November 15th.

Around 130 students attended the 7:00 p.m. event in Spagnuolo Hall, leaving some empty seats dotted around the venue.

“I was pleased with the outcome,” said Alicia Berry, assistant director of Student Involvement. “Bingo is always a popular event; it was actually right around what I was expecting.”

The day’s prizes were all holiday lights, intended as a reminder and help for the upcoming Winter Lights Contest, to be held on December 5th. Other prizes included an inflatable snowman and unicorn.

Most rounds ended with a single winner, but a few rounds had multiple winners, including one round in which freshman Samantha Norwood won. “It was pretty surreal,” Norwood said. “I never heard the second bingo called out. It was my first [time going to] bingo, so I had no idea what would happen.”

Ultimately, Norwood would lose after two rounds of rock-paper-scissors, missing out on a prize package that included the inflatable snowman.

“It was sad, being so close but not winning,” Norwood said. “Who knows if I’ll win again? I know seniors who have said they’ve only ever won once.”

During the Winter Lights Contest, students are welcomed to decorate their dorm room or building, in the case of Lakeview with winter lights and inflatables. The best-decorated hall will win a private bingo night, with a theme of their choice.

Transparency Statement: The writing process of this article began with attending the event. I arrived no less than thirty minutes early, to interview Alicia Berry. During the event, Sam Norwood, who sat at my table, won the round, but lost the tiebreaker. I began interviewing her immediately, between calls of numbers, finishing after the event. I followed up with Alicia Berry early the following week to get her reaction to the attendance.
