Casey Eldred gearing up for first edition of Pierce Arrow

After a semester’s worth of work, Pierce Arrow Editor-in-Chief, Casey Eldred is getting ready to publish this year’s first edition of the Pierce Arrow.
Her job is to delegate story ideas, edit articles, design the paper, and coordinate plans for distributing copies across campus.
The Pierce Arrow staff is made up entirely of Franklin Pierce students.

Students meet on Thursdays at 3:30. Early meetings in the semester focus on generating story ideas and assigning reporters to topics. The paper features a campus news section, both a student and faculty spotlight, a sports section, and a section focused on the 2020 election cycle.
Students write articles and send them back over to Eldred. Once Eldred is done editing each article, she sends them all over to Fitzwater Center Director Dr. Kristen Nevious for a final check before plugging them into the paper.
The design of the paper is made with Adobe Indesign, a software that creates a template for laying out the newspaper. Eldred must fit all of the articles, complete with photographs, into a 12-page newspaper.
Once the paper is printed, Arrow staff bring copies out to different campus hotspots like Spagnuolo Hall and the DiPietro Library.
Eldred plans to release this year’s first edition of the Arrow at some point before the end of the semester in December.
The most satisfying part of editing the Arrow for Eldred comes with getting the most important Franklin Pierce news out to students.
“I definitely like to have an influence over what people read,” she says. “Informing people, even on a small level, it feels like you’re doing a service to the community. Without news, there’s something missing.”
