There is no need to sanitize groceries “more than usual,” according to the Wire Cutter.

When handling food packaging, the best thing to do is wash your hands after handling the package and again before eating. This is because it is better to disinfect yourself rather than disinfect the packaging.

The CDC has recommended wiping down reusable grocery bags if used. However, packing your own reusable bags is also a good idea to help protect yourself and the workers from unnecessary contact.

Although the virus can stay on surfaces for several days, it is now known that there is a much lower chance of getting the virus from surfaces than it is from another person according the CDC.

When cleaning produce, rinsing and cutting away bruised foods is a good idea. In general, washing fruits and vegetables is a smart way to avoid sickness of any kind. The FDA recommends to rinse produce under cold running water and then dry with a towel to get rid of dirt and bacteria.

There is a much greater chance of being exposed to the virus while at the grocery store than you are to get it from the food you buy. Rinsing your food and preparing for meals like people usually do is all that is needed according to the CDC.
