Unusual ways students are staying away from boredom

While feeling isolated, students are getting creative and doing various activities to stay connected and entertained during the quarantine.

Some students are investing their time in being physically active. Lenny Schwartz, a sophomore and golf team member at FPU, has been practicing his skills at his local course. “I have the opportunity to follow social distancing while focusing on my goals in golf,” said Schwartz.

Rollerblading with his dog, George, is keeping him positive throughout this pandemic. “I read a quote that said, ‘we’re not stuck at home, we’re safe at home’ and I think that puts it all into a new perspective,” said Schwartz. “It’s a time for self-improvement.”

Other students are participating in drive-thru birthday parties in their hometowns. Hannah Schwack-Trovitch, President of SGA, is one of those students. “When it’s someone’s birthday, we decorate our cars and drive past their house honking our horns like a parade,” said Schwack-Trovitch. “Just yesterday we did one for a 10-year-old boy. His entire fourth-grade class came, and we had about 35 cars, which was so cool to see!”

Another thing keeping Schwack-Trovitch positive is going for walks. “I find myself going for walks three times a week on one of my town’s private beaches. I get to go outside and get fresh air while practicing social distancing.”

Many students, like freshman Emily Heffernan, have been staying connected with each other through video chat platforms. “I go on Houseparty and talk to my friends from school almost every day,” said Heffernan. “It passes by time and makes us feel a little less separated.”

Lily Collins got this article idea when I was talking to some of my friends about what we had been doing during quarantine that we don’t normally do. I thought it would be cool to inform students of what others are doing to stay busy in hopes that they could use the ideas too. I FaceTimed or texted three students and asked if they would mind sharing the most unusual things they have been doing during this time. All three knew they would be quoted and were happy to share what they’ve been up to.
