While the FPU campus is shut down for the remainder of the year, athletes are still perfecting their crafts with home workouts.

Javier Ramirez, head strength and conditioning coach, has been holding zoom workouts with some of the sports teams in order to keep them in mid-season shape. “This is obviously a challenging time for the world so we wanted to be respectful of the situation,” Ramirez said. “We didn’t want to make it mandatory so we came up with a proposal and offered it to the Coaches, we wanted to keep it fun and let the student athletes compete.”

While athletes are at home, it can be easy for them to lose focus on their training and not be active.  Nate Girardin, member of the FPU men’s lacrosse team, said “ I try to get to shoot and do workouts as often as possible, it’s definitely been helping me deal with the situation.”

One of the biggest problems with home workouts is the equipment needed. Coach Ramirez has found some solutions and said “ You can really use anything your imagination can conjure up. I have used gallon jugs, towels, cans of soup, couches. Our athletes have also been getting creative. We had a hockey player use her hockey stick and put two cinder blocks on the side for RDL’s.”

Another thing that athletes have been doing is online challenges between themselves, where athletes challenge athletes to complete a certain gruesome workout. There have been push-ups, pull-ups, squats, cardio and many other challenges to stay in shape. Once an athlete is nominated, he takes a video of him/herself, and posts it on social media, nominating three more people.
