Patricia Egan wants people to learn about nutrition
by Nick Maxwell
Patricia Egan wants to inform people about the realities of eating right while also showcasing her talents as a speaker and researcher with her poster at the Academic Showcase about nutrition’s impact on quality of life.
Egan said in a Zoom interview, “With my poster I want people to learn that there is more to being healthy than just clean equals good… some
people don’t know there is more to nutrition than eating salad.”
Egan originally created the project for her FYI class’s final research presentation and said she chose nutrition as her topic because it is her minor and is something that she is passionate about.
Laura Christoph, chair of the Academic Showcase Committee and Patricia’s professor for FYI, convinced her to submit the project to the event because she was impressed with her research skills.
Christoph said in a Zoom interview, “She did a really nice job of collecting credible resources and battling the misinformation that you see a lot of in the nutrition field.”
Egan’s original project won first place at the Freshman FYI Showcase last semester and she said that also bringing it to the Academic Showcase is a rewarding experience for her efforts.
Egan is also a member of the Academic Showcase committee as the lone representative of the student body. The board selects one to two students every year to bring the participants perspective to the event’s planning process.
Christoph said, “I recommended her [to the committee] because I saw her as someone with a lot of potential that could speak on behalf of the students.”
