Sophomore Lance Abella and junior Kayla Thompson presented their research poster on the benefits of strength and conditioning on the women’s rowing team virtually during the academic showcase April 20th.

The poster focused on whether upper body strength training will improve the performance of the women’s rowing team.

Abella and Thompson split the women’s rowing team into two groups, one group focused on regular training and the other focused on aerobic training.

“This study will provide the backbone for the importance of strength generally but will pave the importance of specific movements that cater to different sports that can help vitalize our student athlete population over time,” said Abella in an email interview.

The results of this study showed a significant improvement in the rowing team, although the second group in that focused on aerobic training showed more results than the group with the regular training.

“I’m a college athlete, and it’s important for an athletes overall performance to make sure to prevent injury, the stronger you are and the more strength you have behind you, and the more your taking care of your muscles the less likely you are to get injured, which is a huge part in any sport that you play,” said Thompson in a zoom interview.
