Guatemala is requesting that immigrants test negative before deportation

Guatemala requests that U.S. authorities guarantee all deportees do not have covid-19, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Guatemala is trying to prevent becoming a hotspot for the virus and has temporarily suspended the flights from the U.S. carrying deportees. The decision to suspend flights came after 12 Guatemalans tested positive after being on a flight of 76 deportees.

President Trump has avoided calls from Guatemala for weeks, having vowed to put an end to illegal immigration. The Trump administration released a memo directed at Southern American countries, stating they would suspend visa access to any country that “denies or unreasonably denies” the citizens that the U.S. is deporting.

Guatemala has reported 235 cases and seven fatalities, but those numbers are expected to surge if more deportee flights arrive.
