The New Hampshire and Mount Washington dorms have had six fire alarms go off in the spring semester.

Two of the alarms went off Tuesday night February 19th. More than 20 fire alarms have sounded over the past two semesters.

“The cause of these fire alarms is unknown, according to the fire department,” said Experience Director Marisa Najarian. In order to fix the problem Najarian suggested that students hold each other accountable and pass info along to the CAs.

Paul Lambert, a Mount Washington resident, has his own idea about whats causing the alarms. He said, “I truly think it comes down to people vaping in their rooms when they shouldn’t and that the fire alarms in the showers are just too sensitive.”  He then went on to add that people should go outside and vape if they want less fire alarms.

Najarian also said that Suplex, the company that manufactures the fire alarms, is coming to check the system and that she is calling a mandatory town hall meeting to address the issue. The date of this meeting is to be announced.

There is a crisis of trust in journalism right now.
Many Americans say they don’t trust the news media
anymore, and poll after poll shows that they want newspapers to be more transparent about how the
news is gathered.
This semester the Exchange is asking its reporters to describe what they did to report the facts, in what
we’re calling a transparency statement. We ask our readers to feel free to use the comment boxes at
the bottom of each article to call them out when the reporters may not have done enough and to
compliment them when you think they’ve done a good job.

In order to write this article we interviewed residents of the dorms, and went down to Residential Life and set up a meeting with Marisa to ask how the fire alarms have been set off, how often they’ve been set off and what students can do to fix it and what residential life is doing to address the issue.

We used to have 6 fire alarms a night starting at 2am and more than 500 a term in the early 90’s! 6 a month sounds peaceful.

I find this article funny. 20 in two semesters?? If you only knew the history of fire alarms in these dorms. The mid-90’s was the epicenter of fire alarms in the double dorms. There were times you would have 5-10 a night. Yes a single night. There were multiple alarms almost every single night. I recall annual alarms in those buildings topping 200. As far as the town, this is what they get for taking over the fire service on campus. 99% of all the alarms on campus are just smoking or today vaping, these were taken care of by the campus department and security, but no Rindge wanted in on the game and now they see how much of a pain in the @ss it is and the costs associated.
