SISTUHS is hosting its fourth annual Mr. FPU event to bring awareness to domestic and sexual violence against women while revitalizing what organizers think is a tired theme.

Mr. FPU is a lighthearted twist on pageant competitions with a heavier purpose behind it. “I think a big thing about Mr. FPU is our whole purpose is to get an educational message across about raising awareness against sexual assault and violence,” said Savannah Flynn, Treasurer of SISTUHS.

Since the reboot of the tradition in 2016, SISTUHS has been working to put on the event for students. SISTUHS’ President Stephanie LeClair said, “Every year since we’ve been freshmen, we’ve been making it bigger and bigger.”

SISTUHS’ Student Government Association Senator Joceylnn Reyna said, “We’re getting a red carpet, so we are really trying to make this year’s event glamorous.”

In addition to their efforts to fill up Spagnuolo Hall, SISTUHS also hand-picked this year’s judges. After interviewing faculty and staff, SISTUHS chose Mack Bean, Helene Rodgers, Katie Copeland, and Andrew Pollom as the judges. The audience also gets to vote on which contestant should win Mr. FPU when there is a tie among the judges.

Nine out of the 10 spots to compete in becoming Mr. FPU were filled, which is the highest number of competitors in the event’s history. The contestants also represent a wide variety of students from different classes and involvement in different extracurriculars.

Not only does the winner get to hold the title of Mr. FPU, but they also win a VR Bundle, Apple Watch, Air Pods, a sash, trophy, and a crown. The crowd has an opportunity to win some prizes as well, such as Air pods as the door prize or custom t-shirts designed by SISTUHS.

SISTUHS is encouraging students to come out and enjoy the show on March 6that seven p.m. and vote for the next Mr. FPU.

How I got this story:

I had contacted the SGA Senator of SISTUHS to set a time to meet up and conduct an interview. The E-Board was able to meet that same day, so we met in the Library. I had questions written out before hand and they ended up providing more details than I expected. I made sure to have my phone charged and voice memos recording as well as jotting down the most important times for quotes. I also made sure to document the correct spelling and position of each source and I verified with them that I would contact them again with any questions. Then, I actually did end up having another question for them and was able to successfully contact them again and get the information necessary.
